Ó Brólchain disappointed at lack of co-operation for poster ban in Galway

Green Party Councillor Níall Ó Brólchain has expressed his disappointment at the lack of cooperation by other parties for any sort of poster ban. Today he was horrified to see Fine Gael election posters erected in Salthill, in clear breach of the law.

Candidates are not legally entitled to erect election posters until 6th May. They will be from that date forward.

“For many years the Greens have been seeking the co-operation of the other parties to agree a code of conduct that will restrict the number of election posters erected and reduce the areas in which they can be erected”, stated Cllr O Brolchain.

“We supported Cllr Lyons motion calling for a voluntary ban as did Fine Gael. That ban has now been clearly breached and the law has also been broken”, stated Cllr O Brolchain, “clearly the ban is not going to work and I wonder will the law be enforced”.

“Both myself and Mairead Ni Chroinin, our candidate for the centre ward, have publicly stated that we will not erect posters along the Green Dragon route of the Volvo Ocean race. We will adhere to that promise come hell or high water”, said Cllr O Brolchain, “other Councillors have said they intend to ignore this and put posters up along the Green Dragon route. I believe that this behaviour is selfish in the extreme and will let our City down when the eyes of the world are on it”.

“I believe it is time to stand up on this issue and I would call on the people of Galway not to vote for those who wilfully erect posters along the Salthill promenade, the Claddagh Quays and the docks area of the City”, concluded Cllr Ó Brólchain.
