| Mayor backs plan to make Galway City a free wireless internet zone | |
Green Party Mayor of Galway City, Niall O'Brolchain is backing a plan to create as many freely accessible
wireless internet hotspots in Galway City as possible.Any businesses can participate, as can individuals and other organisations as well. The basic principle is that the hotspot host gives up a small portion of their internet bandwidth, and in exchange they will be supplied with the necessary equipment to turn their broadband internet connection into a wireless hotspot. Access is free for all for a minimum of 1 half hour per day, with some zones offering more free time, and even more zones offering totally free access all day for anyone.
Bigger installations can be undertaken to enable entire buildings such as hotels, leisure complexes, and
shopping centres for free and/or paid wireless access. Space should be available on the login pages for
owners to advertise their business to the wireless public.Galway based IT company iZone is also planning to make other services available in these hotspots such as wireless telephone and text messaging services, as well video and music streams. “I believe that this is an imaginative plan and as a technologist, I would very much like to see Galway City continuing to develop it’s internet capabilities”, said Mayor O'Brolchain. Niall O Brolchain is aiming to become the first IT/Computer professional to get elected to Dail Eireann. |
